Two Big Trends from IHRSA 2019
Every year top brands in fitness & wellness flock to San Diego to do business at IHRSA. Fit3D scanned hundreds of people, and talked to several thousand about the benefits of 3D body scanning for clubs. We also had the opportunity to talk to multiple franchises about how they are using body assessment technology, and what trends they are experiencing for member experience.
Much of the conference as you would expect revolves around discussions about finance & profitability around running clubs. After all, despite any gains we all make in equipment & programming, at the end of the day we are all running business ventures looking to help gym owners become more profitable. However, there were two big trends that seemed to touch all the speaker sessions this year – Customer Experience & Data.
One of the most memorable sessions we attended was by Perfect Gym’s Peter Croft. Peter explored both these topics & great detail. Specifically, he was able to outline how the full stack of technology could be used to rethink the overall gym experience – covering everything from apps to chatbots. But what we really liked is that he also paused to remind the entire audience that the club business is very much an emotional & social enterprise – the technology needs to make sense & enhance the user experience, not take away from that experience.
Our very own Nicholas Trosko from Fit3D also shared some wisdom on this panel, commenting that “education is a big part of what we do at Fit3D. Data from Body Composition can transform the overall member journey, but we spend a lot of time making sure our customers understand the full sales enablement pitch – otherwise, it’s not a value add.” The data has to be contextually welcoming in a way that speaks to all your members without creeping them out. People like empirical data, but you need to be careful about walking that line about the data behind helpful in very natural ways that are incremental to what they are doing now. Often, both clients & members will welcome a smarter way of doing business, but it has to be easy & familiar.
